As I was relaxing this past Saturday evening I received a phone call from a number identified on my Nokia Lumia 1520 as being from AT&T.
I answered it and a quick recorded call said something along the lines of:
This is AT&T. You are eligible for a $51 bonus on your next wireless bill. Just visit www.bonus51.com and log in to claim your $51 reward.
The call lasted less than 10 seconds and went by so fast I was not 100% sure of exactly everything that was said. The parts that stuck with me immediately were ATT and $51 bonus.
Now I have been around the block a few times so I was immediately suspicious of this offer and decided to check things out a little further.
The phone call came from (800) 170-2048 and a search of the Internet did not turn that up as a suspicious or scam related number. Something else bugged me about the number and that was it leading off with the 170 – might be OK however, it just looked weird.
I then visited the bonus51.com website and it looked pretty official. It had all the right graphics, logos, etc.
Here is what it looked like on my Nokia Lumia 1520:
My biggest trigger on this page for it being suspicious – asking for the last 4 of the SSN as the User ID. Plus the Wireless mega-discount is not very professional either.
That site is now offline so the threat of this specific version of this scam is low however, there have been other ATT related bonus scams over the years. Some of them offering over $500 by supposedly logging into an ATT website and claiming your bonus.
In reality someone else would be getting the bonus of your information because you bit on the phishing attempt.
Be careful out there because they come in all shapes and sizes.
Remember, if it sounds to goo to be true…
