Earlier today in my Weekend Catchup post I highlighted a find from the folks at Into Windows of an executable in the Windows 8.1 Preview’s Windows\System32 directory called SlideToShutDown.exe.
If you have used a Windows Phone and shut it down by pressing and holding the power button then you will be familiar with what this executable does.
I think it is a neat find and could come in handy so I decided to create this shortcut and share it with everyone to make it quick and easy to use on your system.
A couple of assumptions and caveats to use this specific shortcut:
- You must be running the Windows 8.1 Preview
- Your Windows install must be on the C drive on your system. This is the likely case with a majority of installations.
To use this shortcut just download it and extract the shortcut file to your “C:\Users\YourUserDir\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\” directory.
This will place it on your Start Screen and then you can customize its location as you would any other tile on the Start Screen.
To use it just tap the tile and then drag down on the screen to shut your system down.
Update: Thanks to my Twitter followers it has been confirmed that this file exists on x86/x64 installs of Windows 8.1 and the shutdown can be effected using the mouse to click and drag down after you click on the shortcut to start the process.
Enjoy.
