Microsoft has announced that they will release an Out Of Band (OOB) security update on Monday, 02 Aug 2010 which is in response to a vulnerability that is currently being used in a series of malware attacks which are on the rise.

The issue impacts all versions of the following operating systems:

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

An OOB release is Microsoft’s term for any update that is released outside of their normal security Patch Tuesday schedule on the second Tuesday of each month.

You can read the advance bulletin notice with the basic information about the patch but it will not be updated with specifics until the patch is released on Monday however, this patch does address the shortcut vulnerability mentioned in Security Advisory 2286198.  You can read more about the active threat at the Microsoft Malware Protection Center.
