I have no doubt that there are many folks waking up this morning with a brand new computer in their house after Christmas yesterday and that computer most likely has Windows 8.1 installed on it.
If you are just making the move to Windows 8.1 from an older system with Windows 7, Vista or XP (finally – congrats!) then Windows 8.1 is going to seem very, very different to you and that is to be expected. By taking some time to learn more about the Windows 8 interface your transition will be much smoother.
I was reminded of this earlier today when my little sister contacted me on Facebook and asked me to recommend some good resources for learning about Windows 8.1.
My reply was to provide her links to the awesome tutorial videos done by Microsoft’s Scott Hanselman. He has a collection of videos about Windows 8 and the changes in Windows 8.1 that should be required viewing for anyone making the move to Windows 8/8.1. There is a reason his first batch of videos about Windows 8 were titled The Missing Windows 8 Tutorial Videos.
After the huge success of those first videos he then released updated versions when Windows 8.1 came out in 2013 to highlight the changes between Windows 8 and 8.1 and then subsequently did an updated tour for the Windows 8.1 Update 1 that came out earlier this year.
Here is a list of those videos over on YouTube:
- Learn Windows 8 in 3 minutes (OK, it’s really 4) (over 1.5 million views)
- The Missing Windows 8 Instructional Video – Who moved my Windows 8 Cheese (over 320,000 views)
- What’s new in Windows 8.1 – The Missing Instruction Manual (over 115,000 views)
- Windows 8.1 Update 1 – New Features Explained! (over 101,000 views)
As a bonus for you keyboard jockeys out there he has How to use Windows 8.1 effectively with hotkeys (over 19,800 views) available as well.
What resources have you used in the past for learning more about Windows 8/8.1?
