You of course do not need the Internet to have piracy. Even before our lives were filled with digital information and materials the illegal copying of information occurred on a regular basis. The digital age has simply made it easier to do and as you can see by these numbers it is still a big business.
Most companies today have taken steps to reduce piracy such as mandatory activations of software or operating systems, unique serial keys or licenses to operate the software and password protected software downloads. Copying of software media such as DVD’s and CD-ROM’s has also become more sophisticated to prevent casual copying and sharing of software.
Anti-piracy measures are not new. I remember in the early 1990’s when I had my diehard Commodore 64 that I needed a dongle plugged into the back of the computer in order to play the golf game Links. We have come a long way since those days.
