We catch up on a slow week for Windows Insiders and discuss the potential release of the first 19H2 bits to testers. We are still wiping the sleep out of our eyes after we lost an hour overnight thanks to Daylight Savings Time here across much of the United States. Among the news this week we learned that Windows 10 officially crossed the 800 million device threshold, we had another week full of Windows Insider builds for both Fast and Skip Ahead Rings, plus we saw some leaks around Microsoft Edge on Chromium. Of course, the show is littered with headlines around app updates, services, security, social media, Xbox, gaming and a promise for a new privacy focus from Facebook. I catch you up on my latest space news and talk about a scary podcast extortion scam that is happening to some podcasters.

It is official! The Windows 10 Redstone 5 feature update, the sixth feature update for the operating system, will be called the October 2018 Update. This is right in track with the new naming scheme they began tis past Spring with the April 2018 Update for Redstone 4. We had a good week with build releases for Redstone 5 Fast Ring, The Windows 10 RS5 SDK and Windows Server 2018 Insider Preview however, no Skip Ahead releases for Windows 10 19H1 – the seventh feature update that is expected in the March/April 2019 timeframe. We have hardware news from IFA 2018 in Europe along with several app updates, the confirmation of Xbox All Access and a big change to home based Office 365 subscriptions. After a hiatus for work, travel and a working vacation we are back on Observed.Tech and the timing could not be more perfect. In the last 24 hours alone Microsoft has released a massive update to Windows Insiders with Windows 10 Build 14986 aka the Creators Update – the expected third major Feature Update to Windows 10 that is due out in March 2017. Then at WinHEC in China they announced Project Evo for Mixed Reality devices in partnership with Intel for the PC hardware and Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo for a new range of head mounted devices or HMDs to deliver the mixed reality experience at a wide variety of price points to Windows 10 users. After that we heard of the new partnership between Microsoft and Qualcomm to deliver the full blown version of Windows 10 including x86 desktop programs through emulation in 2017. These devices will have a wide range of form factors and could feasibly include phones, tablets, laptops, 2 in 1s, and maybe even home devices similar to Amazon Echo and Google Home. It certainly appears when Microsoft said earlier this year their focus was not on mobile for right now or last week when Satya Nadella told concerned stockholders they were not abandoning mobile that they were right on the mark. It is about to be a very exciting year in the Microsoft and Windows ecosystem and I share my excitement in this week’s return from hiatus show. Enjoy the show and thanks for listening!

Observed Tech PODCAST Episode 196 #OTP

Welcome to Episode 196 of Observed Tech. We are less than two months away from the expected release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update in late July so there is plenty to keep talking about in the Windows 10 world. Last week Windows Insiders received Build 14352 for testing that introduced a couple new features to help with interaction with Cortana and keeping your system secure. There was also a brief appearance for a LastPass browser extension for Microsoft Edge but it has been made unavailable now for some reason. I must admit it was nice to have that extension while it lasted. I share some interesting market share stats for Windows 7 and Windows 10 including comparing their numbers between a work day and a weekend day off. The results just might surprise you. Also covered in this show are some new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps including the Remote Desktop that is now out of preview and has Continuum support plus a new UWP app called Hacked that alerts you if your email address shows up in a security breach. The last app related discussion is about a request from a pair of app developers asking everyone to crowdfund them for $10,000 to cover two months of expenses while they convert their app into a UWP version.
