Observed Tech PODCAST Episode 309 #OTP

This week there was a lot happening in the Microsoft tech world. First, we had the public release of the Microsoft Edge Developer and Canary builds of the company’s new Chromium-based browser on Monday. A couple of hours later they then opened up the Windows Insiders Release Preview ring with Build 18362 of the May 2019 Update aka 19H1. Then mid-week, they merged the Skip Ahead 20H1 ring back to the Fast Ring and made Build 18875 available for testers. Pretty much exactly as we predicted and discussed during last week’s show.

It is Super Bowl Sunday here in the U.S. and I have a Super edition of Observed Tech for you because there was a lot of news this past week across a broad range of subjects. Windows Insiders received a new Fast Ring build for Windows 10 (19H1) and with the opening of the Skip Ahead ring testers got to opt into the prerelease branch to get the first development build of Windows 10 (19H2). I explain how things will work moving forward with a Fast and Skip Ahead Ring now receiving builds. Of course we also have information about financial results for the latest quarter from Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon and all continue to make progress in their own unique approaches. As always scattered throughout the show is news about apps, services, gaming, and security so stay tuned from start to finish to catch everything.

A busy week begins with news about the end of support for Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 7 which is in December 2019 and January 2020 respectively. We had a new build in the Windows Insider program and it continues the trend over the last few builds of just tweaking the UI and putting some finishing touches on the next feature update for the OS. We begin this episode with a reminder that the Windows 7 End of Lifecycle Support clock is ticking and pointing out a Twitter account that you can follow to keep up with the countdown. We also had a new Windows Insider build to talk about along with a new reserved storage enhancement that is rolling out. I share some of my observations on what could be a key success factor for future Windows 10 upgrades. After that we dive into our normal list of things like app updates, the latest on the January 2019 Patch Tuesday, Xbox gaming related news, and a quick rundown of all the new hardware announced last week at the annual Consumer Electronics Show 2019.
