As of today the official account of Pope Benedict XVI, @Pontifex, has nearly 700,000 followers. This growth in followers has all been since this account first appeared on 03 December 2012 just nine days ago.
Just earlier today, the Supreme Pontiff and leader of the Catholic Church, sent his first tweet to those nearly 700,000 followers as well as anyone else on Twitter.
His first tweet was a simple greeting and thanks for the response to his being on Twitter:
