Here we go again – another personal data loss by a big company. Ok, not exactly by the company themselves but someone they hired to provide services. Same difference.
This is the text of the email being sent to all TiVo users who are affected:
Dear TiVo Customer,
Today we were informed by our email service provider that your email address was exposed due to unauthorized access of their system. Our email service provider deploys emails on our behalf to customers who have opted into email-based communications from us.
We were advised by our email service provider that the information that was obtained was limited to first name and/or email addresses only. Your service and any other personally identifiable information were not at risk and remain secure.Please note, it is possible you may receive spam email messages as a result. We want to urge you to be cautious when opening links or attachments from unknown third parties.
We regret this has taken place and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We take your privacy very seriously, and we will continue to work diligently to protect your personal information.If you have unsubscribed in the past, there is no need to unsubscribe again. Your preferences will remain in place.

There are already quite a few TiVo customer’s expressing their displeasure with this exposure of their personal information on Twitter. I can’t blame them either.
According to a press release at the TiVo PR website the company who lost the emails and names, Epsilon, also lost info for JP Morgan and Kroger customers in the same breach. That same press release also confirms that Epsilon did not have access to TiVo customer service information or credit card details. TiVo is conducting an internal investigation to verify the info Epsilon gave them is accurate.
Maybe they think Epsilon is not being honest with them about the data loss or something.
Anyway, it seems like we can not get through a week without some type of personal information being lost to the net or on some companies laptop.
When will this madness stop?
