According to StatsCounter.com Windows 7 and Windows XP are on a collision course within the next year.

Stats are based on aggregate data collected by StatCounter on a sample exceeding 15 billion pageviews per month collected from across the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites.

Based on the stats they have collected over the last 12 months and the direction things are going we are very likely going to see Windows 7 surpass the diehard Windows XP in market share in 2011.

If you look at the global stats, the first graph, there is still a 25% gap between the OS’s.  However, just looking at US numbers this gap is only 10%.

I predict that both will cross paths sometime in 2011 with Windows 7 exceeding the Windows XP share in the US before the middle of the year.  As for the worldwide numbers – that one is going to be close and likely take a significant portion of the year to get there.
