Virtual Hard Drives (VHD) can be a terrific way to test out operating systems and software as we have discussed on this site before.

Well Microsoft has embraced the VHD format and wants you to learn more about it.  They recently published an electronic document to give you an extensive look at them – 90 pages worth of information in fact.

This guide provides an introduction to virtual hard disks (VHDs) in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. It includes an overview of technologies that you use to configure VHDs, as well as procedures to help guide you through deploying VHDs.

Curious to see how much Microsoft is using the VHD format?  Take a look at this page of Microsoft VHD’s compiled by Microsoft Talk to see the various VHD’s that are available.
