AV Test is an Independent IT-Security Institute and they recently ran 19 security products through real world tests using the latest publicly available versions to determine how effective they are at their default settings.

Well Microsoft Security Essentials was one of the 19 programs they tested and it received their Anti Virus Certification.

They scored the program in three areas and this is how MSE did with 6.0 as the highest score possible:

  • Protection: 4.0
  • Repair: 4.5
  • Usability: 5.5

Four of the programs they looked at did not get certified in this test and two they did not mention were tested but the results were not posted:

Of the remaining 13 programs here is the order in which they finished with tied scores listed alphabetically:

  1. Kaspersky- Internet Security 2010 (16.5)
  2. Panda- Internet Security 2010 (16)
  3. Symantec- Norton Internet Security 2010 (16)
  4. F-Secure- Internet Security 2010 (15.5)
  5. AVG- Internet Security 9.0 (14.5)
  6. G Data: Internet Security 2010/2011 (14.5)
  7. BitDefender- Internet Security Suite 2010 (14.0)
  8. Microsoft- Security Essentials 1.0 (14)
  9. Avira- Premium Security Suite 10.0 (13.5)
  10. Eset- Smart Security 4.0 (13.5)
  11. PC Tools- Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus 7.0 (13.0)
  12. Avast- Internet Security 5.0 (12.5)
  13. Webroot- Internet Security Essentials 6.1 (12.0)

It is great to see MSE doing so well in its short existence alongside some very established programs.  Congrats to the MSE Team on this achievement.
