At 32,000 Feet and 500 Miles Per Hour

I am a geek – not ashamed of it at all. So to be able to be connected to the Internet while on a 4 1/2 hour flight from Atlanta to Los Angles is like the ultimate in geekiness – at least the ultimate I have it so far.

I did a write up and review of GoGoInflight WiFi last year when I first used it on a short flight and was very impressed.

Well the use of in-flight WiFi has expanded quite a bit since that flight last September.

Currently this service is available on the following airlines:

  • Air Canada
  • AirTran Airways
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Air Lines
  • United Airlines
  • Virgin America
  • US Airways (Coming Soon)

So what can you do on this connection? Well let’s see what I have done up here:

  • E-Mail checking (POP3 and IMAP)
  • Newsgroups
  • RSS Feeds
  • Twitter
  • Windows Live Messenger including not only chatting but also a live webcam session with my wife.  The video picture was quite good.
  • Remote connection to my Windows Home Server to grab a file from my shared directories.
  • FTP to my webserver.
  • Managing and updating my website via its WordPress interface.
  • Posting to my website with Windows Live Writer.
  • Uploading a photo using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

So basically you can accomplish anything you can do at ground level. Not a bad way to spend a cross country flight is it?
